These installations, which take the form of light, mobile electric fencing, will remain in place from April to June. Their purpose is to keep grazing away from these small areas (3 to 10 hectares) during the grasshopper growth and reproduction period.
The aim is twofold: to increase vegetation cover locally and to keep out the predatory birds that accompany the flocks.
This measure, successfully tested since 2015 on the Peau de Meau grazing area, has been extended to three new sites this year.
The first releases of Crau Plain Grasshoppers are expected to take place there in May or June, in line with the species’ reintroduction strategy.
Breeders present on these grazing areas have been asked to define the size and location of these enclosures, as well as the technical details of their installation. They will receive financial compensation for the loss of food resources. Our thanks to them for their openness to this type of cooperation!
