Camilla Crifò (CEN PACA) and Perrine TURIEZ (Chambre d’Agriculture 13) hosted an educational and entertaining stand, focusing on the themes of the dry Crau, its biodiversity, pastoralism, and of course, the now iconic Crau Plain Grasshopper!
This was an opportunity to talk about the place of this insect in the collective imagination, and to unravel a few preconceived ideas about it (no, it’s not a pest, and no, we don’t breed it to eat it!), as well as to discuss its role in the Coussoul ecosystem, its role as an indicator of the state of the environment, the threats it faces and the protective measures put in place to preserve this species.
Throughout the day, children were able to take part in a “make your own cricket out of clay” workshop, offered continuously at the stand, which introduced them to the morphology of the insect by manipulating natural materials.
Four enthusiastic and efficient CEN PACA volunteers gave generously of their time to support the LIFE team and provide a warm welcome at the stand for the 170 or so curious visitors! Many thanks to Mireille, Elisa, Anne and Caroline!
