©Axel Wolff

The day began with a review of the breeding programme, followed by a field visit to the breeding facilities. This was followed by small-group workshops focused on key themes such as captive breeding, reintroduction, pastoral management, and population monitoring.
Key topics discussed included:

  • The possibility of extending the LIFE programme until the end of 2026 and the new opportunities this could bring, including the possibility of conducting additional field seasons and further reintroductions.
  • Advancements in captive breeding, including increased individual longevity and a higher number of egg pods produced. Although health challenges such as iridovirus and nematodes remain, solution and strict protocols have been implemented and to address them. Strategies were also discussed to optimise hatching conditions and complete the full breading cycle in aviaries within the Crau.
  • Managing egg predators in the soil of the breeding aviaries –slug-control being a particular focus.
  • The importance of continuing to engage breeders in conservation efforts was strongly emphasized as a key for long-term success.

This workshop, by facilitating real-time sharing and idea exchange, contribute significantly to the conservation management of the species.
