Primo is the first among a new generation of grasshoppers, with the initial hatching observed on March 28 at the Barben zoo breeding station. Hatching will continue for several weeks, both in the terrariums and outdoor aviaries at the three breeding sites.

Our young grasshopper, barely the size of a pinkie nail and weighing as much as a grain of rice, is still in the early stages of growth. By the end of this period, it is expected to measure between 3.5 and 4.5 centimeters and will contribute to the species’ reproduction.

For over two years, the Conservatoire, in collaboration with the Chambre d’agriculture des Bouches-du-Rhône, the Parc Animalier de la Barben, and the Citadelle de Besançon, has been dedicated to saving the species through the LIFE SOS Crau grasshopper project. These hatchlings signify the beginning of the 2024 breeding season, and the teams are committed to providing optimal living and breeding conditions for the grasshoppers. The goal is to conduct an initial reintroduction during the spring.

We will continue to provide updates on our cherished little grasshopper in the coming weeks.
