The African steppe, towards La Barben!

During the day, the pupils take part in a workshop with Louisianne, the park’s educational manager. During this workshop, they learn about the main principles of a steppe ecosystem: aridity, short vegetation, food chain, etc. Often better known than local species, the savannah animals present in the park give them a good understanding of the interactions between living beings and their environment, the importance of each species and the fragility of ecosystems.

They can then take a self-guided tour of the park.

Back to Provence, heading for the Crau steppe!

The second day was spent at the Ecomusée and the Réserve naturelle des coussouls de Crau. Accompanied by Delphine, the pupils revisited the concepts they had learned at the La Barben park.

Then our little hero with the short wings enters the dance! The pupils learn to differentiate between groups of insects on the basis of their morphology: Diptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera… Many new words are learnt, and their sense of observation is sharpened to differentiate the Crau grasshopper from its cousins!

Field trip: time to admire nature!

During this outing, the pupils admire this unique landscape and learn more about its particular features: geology, fauna, flora, threats…

Depending on the time of year, they may also come across the flocks of sheep that are such an integral part of the coussouls landscape, and talk to the shepherds about their work.

These two days are full of discoveries for pupils and teachers alike, helping them to understand the importance of preserving all wildlife, even the most discreet, such as our extremely rare Crau grasshopper!
